I was tired of coming to the gym every weekday for several years and not getting anywhere. I thought that lifting a few weights every other day and walking on the treadmill was all I needed, then came the ” Women and Weights” program. It hasn’t by any means been easy, but Jennifer is a great motivator and very knowledgeable in the weight training and nutritional field. Keeping a food journal has been very beneficial, along with a cardio program and weight training. For as many as 3 days after a workout, I still experience very sore muscles. There are times it hurts to move in bed at night or get out of my car and take a few steps after sitting for a while. Jennifer has taught me to make better choices when it comes to eating and taught me how important it is to include cardio along with weight training. Weight training is not a piece of cake nor will it ever be. You start with relatively light weights and long rests between sets, then work your way to heavier weights and supersets. I don’t love it while I’m doing it but I feel great when the hour is over and what I love most are the results. Staying with the program is key to getting the results one is after. I am writing this letter to express to you how valuable Jen Schumm has been to me as a personal trainer. Over the past 19 years that I have been active in my own physical fitness, I have shunned working with a trainer because I had not been able to find an individual in whom I could give my absolute trust. That changed when I first met with Ms. Schumm.
From the very beginning, she has inspired me in ways I did not realize I could be, especially in terms of proper nutrition and spiritual well-being. Ms. Schumm’s very holistic approach of integrating physical, spiritual, and nutritional needs has taken my personal performance levels to areas I could never have imagined.
She is by far one of the most articulate individuals I have ever met. Going far beyond merely stating what I need to do to accomplish my fitness goals, Ms. Schumm delineates for me the whys and wherefores of how to do so. Her knowledge of resistance training, cardiovascular training, diet preparedness, just to mention a few, is only surpassed by her dedication to me as a client.

I started working with Jenny in the Fall with core building and strengthing. The most important thing along with our workouts was what Jenny wrote down for us to eat. My husband and I have never really watched that carefully, and now I feel Jenny has us trained to be aware of everything we eat. I started the First-timer training in the Spring, doing swimming, running and biking 4-5 times a week, and finished the Danskin Triathlon with ease on July 16th, 2006. Okay, another set. Okay, another set. Okay, another set. Okay……enough already! Can’t we please stop! If I feel I can’t lift one more weight, all I hear is up….up….up. Why do I put up with this torture? Because it works, that’s why.
My name is Patrick Murray and I have been training at my gym with Jennifer Schumm for the past 5 months. Since we began, I have lost over 40 pounds and decreased my waist 4 inches. There is no numerical seal to express how much better I feel both physically and psychologically. I believe what expresses those feelings best is the fact that I now wear shirts tucked into my pants rather than hanging loosely to hide my stomach. I believe it was that very stomach that motivated me to begin this workout routine.
In my early 20’s I was very thin. Working in construction and routine daily activities was enough to keep me thin and in great shape. I started college at 30 and began expanding both my mind and my midsection. Fourteen years later, after law school and a rather sedentary lifestyle, my belly had gotten so big I could hardly see my feet. At that point, I decided it was time to do something about it.
When I first started training with Jennifer, she made me write down everything I ate. I hated doing this, but as the pounds came off, it got easier. Jennifer encouraged me to do my daily cardio and suggested an alternative way of eating to help rid my bad habits. This new routine of cardio and diet was just the beginning. The weight room was next.
It started with fairly light weights and nice big breaks in between sets. Now we are up to drop sets and jumping from machine to machine with no breaks in between. It gets rather difficult, but the results are worth it. I complain a great deal, but I am beginning to enjoy the workouts. I also see results other than weight loss. After months of encouragement from Jennifer, I recently purchased my first ever tank tops. I had never worn them before because I always considered them to be “muscle” shirts and therefore nothing I ever needed. But now I have lots of muscles and enjoy wearing them, especially when working out.
I don’t think workouts will ever be “fun” for me. However with Jennifer’s motivation and the changes I can see and feel, they have become much more bearable. Who knows what could happen if I continue to pursue this bodybuilding routine. Along with looking better, feeling better, and living longer, I now know I could become governor of California!
Working with Jennifer in ‘Women and Weights’ has been the best money and time I have ever spent!
Jennifer is wonderful. Very knowledgeable, supportive, but challenges us to reach and surpass our weight training and nutritional goals! (No picture available) I signed up for the “Women and Weights” program a year ago. My goal was to learn how to use the machines and free weights in the weight room. Also, I wanted to learn how to really get results with weight training. I had previously been exercising regularly, but not getting the results I wanted. During the 6 week program with Jennifer, I learned much more than I had expected. She was not only great at teaching me what exercises I needed to do to get the results I wanted, but she also was extremely helpful at teaching me how to eat the right foods to get results. I believed that since I wasn’t overweight, I could eat whatever I wanted. Jennifer helped me learn how to eat much more nutritiously. I immediately felt better with my new “meal plan” and soon after that, I began to actually see the results of combining weight training with a nutritious diet.
Soon after the “Women and Weights” program ended, I decided that I wanted to continue to train with Jennifer. She has been great at keeping me challenged in my workout and has been flexible with my busy schedule. Also, she has been wonderful about finding other people for me to train with who have similar goals as mine. Jennifer continues to motivate and teach me during each training session. It has now been 1 year since I met Jennifer and I feel better now about my fitness level than I ever have.
Initially, I was amazed by Jen’s energy level which in turn was a large motivating factor for me. I also learned that she definitely practices what she preaches. She is a nutritional expert as well as a knowledgeable trainer. My sessions with Jen are never boring as I can see results in my overall shape and increased strength. She challenges me like no other trainer has before and for this I am thankful.
I do feel that I must write to you about the personal training I have been receiving from Jennifer Schumm since January. In short, her services have been exemplary. I ride with some serious biker riders. They are great guys, but boy are they competitive and biking is a big deal. When I started training with Jenn, I told her my goal was simply to start acquiting myself honorably with this group on some of the big climbs we did. I never expected to hang with them to the top, but if I could manage just once not to get dropped and lose sight of them, I would be happy.
Fast forward five months and we are riding up a newly paved road near Squaw Pass. As we start up the climb, one at a time our small group of riders pulls away from me. But I don’t lose sight of the tail end.
The road gets steep, then steeper as it switches back on itself. After five tough miles, I notice the last rider seems to be dropping back, and I assume he has some message to convey before pulling away again.
But as I near him, and pull up alongside, he only looks at me briefly and says “brutal climb” before turning back and concentrating on cranking his pedals.
Somehow, incredibly, I pass him, and then another guy as we get into the last mile. Although I never catch the leaders, I feel wonderful.
Not only am I not dropped, but I reach the peak 2 or 3 minutes ahead of the last two guys. It’s not spectacular, not a podium finish, and nothing to boast about, but for me it was everything.
I actually only met Jennifer in the last year when I started searching for someone who could work with me. I never really used personal trainers because I thought I could do things on my own and go from there. As I became a professional soccer player my thoughts changed quickly and my father told me to go to STAC in order to try working out with Jennifer. I came on the first day expecting to take it pretty easy and get used to things but that was not the case. Even though we just met and it was my first time, I felt comfortable and confident with the workouts we started doing even though it was in no way easy. Over the next few meetings I was pushed every single session and with that, I started feeling stronger and stronger. Where I might cut a set short when working out alone, Jennifer made sure to keep pushing me to finish every exercise. I really enjoyed the detail and the design of the workouts as they were different than most things I’ve done before. It was very centralized on building stability and strength from the lower body and core and then using that to be able to make more explosive movements. This unique approach allowed me to start noticing differences when I was on the soccer field. I just felt more stable and sturdy when going into tackles or taking off from sprints. I really wish I could have started working with Jennifer earlier in my career as I think that would have been able to boost my performance levels much sooner. Overall I had a fantastic experience in the time I worked with Jennifer and would recommend anyone trying to reach a higher level in athletics or simply get into much better shape.
